Euphoria is back, and the show that has never shied away from controversy delivered a brand new one for fans in its Season 3 return. Yes, there’s a five-year time jump that finds Rue (Zendaya) being a drug mule, but there’s also Cassie’s (Sydney Sweeney) OnlyFans storyline that sees her deliver kinky content for people online in an effort to save some money to pay for a big wedding to Nate. Sounds like the kind of thing this show would do.
The episode sees Cassie dressed like a puppy, with a collar and leash. There are also clips teasing that she will also pose dressed up as a baby, complete with a pacifier and pigtails. Both are fairly common kinks, but that doesn’t mean people appreciated the way they were presented. Controversy, thy name is Sam Levinson.

Reaction to the storyline was pretty strong online. One fan said “Euphoria was always provocative but it was never gross. This episode was GROSS”,” while another one asked “Can’t actors say no to some scenes? This show is written like someone’s sick fantasies come to life. I bet Sam just wants to see how far he can push the envelope. The show is disgusting and uncomfortable to watch.”
But fans didn’t just find it gross, they pointed out the content crossed the line, particularly considering what’s going on in the world. “extremely unsettling that pedophilic content like this is being normalized on a mainstream show like euphoria. we need to remember that hollywood is pushing this content in a world that’s still horrified by the files, which is so so sickening,” yet another fan pointed out.

Creator Levinson defended the storyline, telling The Daily Beast, he wanted to “break the wall” between the show and its viewers, adding that Cassie has “got her dog house and her little dog ears and the nose, and that has its own humor, but what makes the scene is the fact that her housekeeper is the one filming it.”
“What we wanted to always find is the other layer of absurdity that we’re able to tie into it so that we’re not too inside of her fantasy or illusion—the gag is to jump out, to break the wall,” Levinson said.
He also spoke about the filming decisions when it comes to those scenes, saying, “Some of these scenes we only lit with these ring lights that she would use…. When you’re inside, it’s a beautiful, glowing front light, but then you jump out of it, and it’s just a pool of light, and everything surrounding it is dark. It’s just gnarly and jarring.”
“We wanted to capture what she’s trying to show the audience and be inside of it,” he continued. “But then also pull back wider and see how depressing it is.”
Sweeney herself seemed to defend the plotline, telling Entertainment Tonight at the show’s premiere, “Cassie is a crazy character.”
“She will do anything and at all costs to be famous this season,” Sweeney said. “She makes a lot of wild, interesting choices.” All for the expensive wedding she wants.
Fans feel like the show has gone off the rails. And the season is just beginning. Who knows what else Levinson has in store for us?
